The Arts Initiative is dedicated to providing a platform for University of Michigan students to share their artistic voice and creativity!
These programs showcase a wide range of student creative work.
Arts Initiative believes there is an artist inside each of us. These competitions are your opportunity to share your artistic genius, exhibit your work for the University community and win some prizes! Competitions will be held periodically throughout the year, with calls for art using different themes and mediums. Submissions are narrowed down by staff, and then the finalists are voted on by the public in the Unions and by the U-M Community online. Winners get great prizes, so be sure you’re signed up for Arts Info, our weekly email, so you’ll hear about our future contests and opportunities.
Memory Project's goal is to provide handmade, heartfelt portraits as special memories to children living in substantial challenges of poverty, war, violence, and natural disasters. Members of Memory Project receive a photograph and craft a portrait that pertains to the likeness of the child. These portraits will be done on paper/ canvas. They hope to touch the lives of youth while fostering a sentiment of human connection and intercultural understanding from here, at the University of Michigan, to areas across the world. Memory Project is looking for students to get involved!
Lighthouse Productions is a group that seeks to integrate faith in Jesus with artistic giftings. They present a variety show that tells a cohesive story based on a theme using various acts. These acts are put together by students around campus. In the end, their mission is to glorify God through the arts. They are holding auditions (signup deadline is January 16) for their variety show!
Star Wars Fan Club talks about Star Wars and watches videos about lore and theories, but the most fun thing they do is fight with lightsabers (they have a lot of extras, so you don't need your own!). They will be holding watch parties as new content releases on Disney+ (account not required), and other events include game days where they play Star Wars related board games and video games, and other smaller projects. They also hope to attempt to build their own lightsabers and maybe even a droid one day.
